Formula One Management unveiled a special camera on Fernando Alonso’s car in FP1, the camera will broadcast from an unique POV – facing the helmet of the Spaniard.

Kerbing between turn 20 and 21 got damaged early into the session, causing big dust clouds and fly-away debris – several drivers had difficulties, while driving over the kerb.

Alonso ended the first practice session in only 19th place, with only newly announced 2019 Williams driver Robert Kubica, behind in 20th place.

Team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne, who will also have his F1 farewell this weekend, was the faster McLaren in FP1 – claiming the 18th fastest time.

Red Bull was on top in FP1, with Max Verstappen leading team-mate Daniel Ricciardo ahead of the rest of the field.

Free Practice 2

As the sunset in the Yas Islands, Free Practice Two begun.

Fernando Alonso run with his new special helmet, suit and boots in FP2, to complete the set with his farewell livery. The Spaniard set an impressive 13th fastest lap time.

The sister McLaren of Stoffel Vandoorne was 18th quickest, beating both Williams’ drivers.

Valtteri Bottas was quickest overall in FP2, leading both Red Bull’s ahead of new world champion and Mercedes team-mate, Lewis Hamilton.

Fernando Alonso, Post-Practice:

“In such hot conditions FP1 wasn’t very representative, so it gave us a little time to experiment with some stuff for next year’s concept in terms of car development.

“In FP2 we concentrated more on this weekend, testing two types of tyres and got some useful information. We’ll be more ready for tomorrow and we’ll see where we are.

“If the track is going to be that hot again tomorrow for FP3, we’ll do some more tests for next year, and hopefully gather some good information for the team.

“This weekend is going to be tough for us. We need to be realistic. Friday is normally a little bit better as people are hiding, and we expect qualifying to be difficult.”
